Champagne in the Snow

When I predicted that my holiday season was going to be a bit different than usual, I really had no idea just how different it would be. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day passed by pretty uneventfully, as we readied ourselves for a week of vacation in Wisconsin. The day after Christmas, I started packing up the dinner that we made to share with family in Oconomowoc after our gift giving concluded. Mike went missing in the midst of it all, and when I called him, he said he was running an errand. I thought nothing of it, and loaded the last of the gifts into the car so that we could get on the road when he returned.

Later on, as night fell across the snow-covered fields in Oconomowoc, soon after we started in on the gifts, and as I took the lasagna out of the oven and readied the tiramisu cake, Mike announced that he had one last surprise to unveil outside. My family started trading confused looks as we bundled up to leave the barn and go outside into the snow.

Once we were out under the sky, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I don’t remember much after that, as I was in such a state of surprise and shock that I started sobbing (ugly crying, really, and there are unfortunate pictures to prove it) hysterically. Of course, after nearly nine years together, I don’t think I even needed to say yes for him to know my answer to his question.

As it turned out, my dad was the only one in the immediate family who knew it was coming. The only other person to know was a relative who owns a jewelry store down in Cincinnati. In keeping with family tradition, Mike got the ring there, after making the 5+ hour drive down and back in one day while I was at work. As for that mysterious errand that he ran earlier in the day…

It was to pick up a bottle of champagne, which he hid in the snow until it was time to celebrate our engagement.

We’re thinking about setting the date for this fall. So, now you know where I’ve been for the last few weeks!

Untraditional

via

Though our car is packed with gifts, food and warm clothes for a holiday trip as in any other year, this year we head north instead of south. For the first time in my entire life, I won’t be in Cincinnati for Christmas. Instead, we’ll be visiting my sister in Lake Country before moving on to the cabin in the Northwoods for a few days to ring in the New Year.

Though I’m sad that some traditions will have to be put on hold this year, I am happy that I’ll still be spending the holidays with family, and I wish the same for you as we say goodbye to 2013.

Thanks for following this year's adventures, I'll look forward to seeing you here next year!

Holiday Home

A vintage blackboard scored at the Randolph St. Market & the sweetest little pink bottlebrush trees

We spent the last few days wrapping things up before we leave town to celebrate Christmas. Though I still have a few days of work before the holiday break can officially begin, it’s sure feeling a lot like Christmas around the condo.

Seriously addicting peppermint truffles from Trader Joe's
This year's holiday card, featuring a picture that Mike took during last year's winter visit to Lake Superior
Fresh evergreen boughs strung up on the mirror
Homemade cherry granola packaged in gingham jars and tied with raffia bows for gifting
Mini bows in this year's bold gift wrap color scheme
Extra chocolatey cookies waiting to be tucked into tins

Simple Scents

Satsumas: Delightful to look at, eat, and smell

If you’re in the Chicago area, you must plan a winter visit to The Spice House. You can smell the store in the cold air from blocks away, and once you enter, you’re warmly embraced by the smell of far-off lands. I usually come ready with a list to stock up on old favorites, and while the spice merchants fill a worn wicker basket with my requested flavors, I wander around and find new mixes to add to my order. The countless jars in my overstuffed pantry are a testament to this strategy.

During my most recent trip, I impulsively grabbed a package of cinnamon sticks for $1.79. When I got home, I tossed a few into boiling water along with some orange rind, and the delicious, long-lasting holiday home fragrance that resulted was enough to give my not-so-inexpensive Diptyque candles a run for their money this holiday season. Next time, I’ll be adding cardamom seeds and whole cloves to the shopping list.

Told you they're gorgeous
The cinnamon game changer
The ingredients couldn't be easier, or cheaper
Just add water...
..bring to a simmer, breathe deep and enjoy!

Beer & Chocolate

Lined up and ready to be consumed

Chicago has a great local food scene, and all of the amazing businesses in town make it really easy to put together a themed holiday gift. I thought I might share a fun and fairly inexpensive idea that we used last year: pairings of Wild Ophelia chocolate and Goose Island specialty Belgium beers.

We bought four-packs of each kind of beer and split them up, and each couple that got a gift box received two bottles of each type of beer and one corresponding bar of chocolate, along with two small glasses, cocktail napkins and a menu to outline the suggested pairings. They were such a hit that we kept one of the line-ups for ourselves, and we sampled everything one lazy and slightly tipsy Sunday afternoon while watching a football game and taking notes on our favorites. Sometimes the best gifts are the ones that you give to yourself!

Sofie & Southern Hibiscus Peach Milk Chocolate Bar:
This beer’s citrus notes complement the subtle sweetness of the peach-infused chocolate.
Pere Jacques & Peanut Butter & Banana Milk Chocolate Bar:
Pere Jacques' malty sweetness and hints of dark, dried fruit complement the sweet and savory bar.
Pepe Nero & Beef Jerky Milk Chocolate Bar:
The bold, earthy and roasty flavors of Pepe Nero are the perfect complement to this tangy, savory chocolate.
Matilda & Smokehouse BBQ Potato Chip Dark Chocolate Bar:
The spicy, savory character of this beer cuts through the sweet and smoky flavor of the bar.
